Pig Butchering Scams: How the Long Con Works and What You Can Recover

Pig butchering - sometimes called "sha zhu pan" - is the most profitable consumer fraud of the decade. Victims rarely use the word "scam" about it, because it never felt like one while it was happening.

Why it is called pig butchering

The criminal "fattens" the victim with small, believable wins before the "slaughter." It is a long-con, run by organised syndicates, that blends romance or friendship with a fake investment platform.

The playbook

  1. The approach. A wrong-number text, a dating-app match, or a friendly message that turns into daily conversation over weeks.
  2. The seed. They mention modest investment profits - often crypto - and offer to "help" you try a small amount.
  3. The fake platform. You are sent a link to a trading app that looks professional. Your small deposit "grows." You may even withdraw a little, which builds total trust.
  4. The squeeze. You invest life savings, remortgages or loans. The dashboard shows impressive gains.
  5. The wall. When you try to withdraw, you are hit with "taxes," "compliance fees" or "release charges." Every payment only unlocks another demand.

Warning signs, in hindsight

  • The relationship moved fast and felt unusually flattering.
  • Investments were guaranteed, or the platform was pushed rather than researched.
  • You were discouraged from meeting on video or in person.
  • Withdrawals always required paying more first.

What can actually be recovered

  • Crypto sent to a traceable wallet can sometimes be frozen at an exchange if acted on quickly.
  • Bank wires may be recalled or frozen if the receiving account is still identified and cooperative.
  • Card payments can occasionally be chargebacked within scheme deadlines.

The common factor is time. The syndicate cashes out fast, so the first 24-72 hours decide most outcomes.

If this is you

Do not send another "fee." Save every chat, the platform URL, wallet addresses and bank references. These scams are reportable, prosecutable and - when caught early - sometimes recoverable. A confidential assessment tells you whether your trail is still live.
