Recovered £14,800 - Online Marketplace Fraud - Luxury Goods

Client purchased luxury watches from a sophisticated fake marketplace that cloned a legitimate dealer's website.

01

How they were scammed

Robert found what appeared to be a reputable luxury watch dealer's website offering significant discounts on Rolex and Patek Philippe timepieces. The website was a pixel-perfect clone of a legitimate dealer, complete with stolen customer reviews and authentic-looking product photography. Robert purchased three watches totalling £18,500 via bank transfer. The tracking numbers provided were fake, and the website disappeared 5 days after his order.

02

When they contacted us

Robert contacted us 7 days after payment when the tracking numbers proved invalid and the original dealer confirmed the website was a clone.

03

Our investigation

We traced the bank transfer to a UK-based account opened under a shell company. The website was hosted on a server in Eastern Europe using a domain that differed by one letter from the legitimate dealer. Our digital forensics team identified that the same operators had created at least 4 similar clone websites targeting different luxury goods markets.

04

Challenges faced

The clone website used sophisticated technical measures to appear legitimate, including valid SSL certificates, professional design, and stolen SEO content. The receiving bank initially resisted freezing the account.

05

Breakthrough moment

We identified that one of the other clone websites had been reported to the same bank 2 weeks earlier, but they had failed to act. This negligence strengthened our legal position significantly.

06

Successful recovery

The bank, faced with evidence of their failure to act on previous reports, agreed to freeze the account voluntarily. £14,800 was recovered directly. The remaining £3,700 had been transferred but was subject to ongoing criminal investigation. Total recovery: £14,800 (80%).

Lessons learned

  • Clone websites are increasingly sophisticated and can fool even experienced buyers
  • Always verify the exact URL matches the legitimate dealer - check character by character
  • Bank transfers offer no buyer protection - use credit cards or escrow for high-value purchases
  • If a deal seems too good to be true for luxury goods, it almost certainly is

Prevention tips

  • Always navigate to dealer websites directly - never through search engine results or links
  • Verify the exact URL and SSL certificate details match the legitimate business
  • Use credit cards for online purchases - they offer Section 75 consumer protection
  • Contact the legitimate dealer directly to verify any discounted offers
